Biography

Dr. Leen Aerts is an obstetrician-gynecologist. She obtained a Master’s degree in Sexology from the University of Leuven in Belgium and is certified in Psychosomatic and Psychosocial Medicine.

 

For many years, Dr. Aerts worked in the multidisciplinary clinic for female sexual dysfunctions at the University Hospitals in Leuven.

She obtained her PhD in Biomedical Sciences in 2014. Her doctoral research focused on the sexual well-being of women after surgical treatment for gynecological cancer or breast cancer.


From 2014 to 2016, Dr. Aerts held a postdoctoral research position in the “Female Sexual Health” laboratory of Prof. Dr. Sophie Bergeron at the University of Montreal in Canada. She contributed to several multidisciplinary research projects in the field of chronic genital pain and collaborated with sexual medicine specialists and vulvar specialists in Canada and the United States.


From 2016 to 2022, she worked as a staff member in the Department of Gynecology at the University Hospital of Geneva in Switzerland. She was responsible for the outpatient clinic for women with sexual dysfunctions, vulvar pathology, and chronic genital pain. She also worked in the endometriosis center and in the clinic for women with genital mutilation.


In September 2022, she started her private practice in Geneva for women with sexual problems, vulvar pathology, and chronic genital pain. In October 2025, she founded the multidisciplinary center Elle+ in Mechelen in Belgium.

 

Based on her scientific knowledge and clinical experience in the field, she emphasizes the importance of a multidisciplinary approach and holistic patient care tailored to the current situation of the patient or couple.

 

In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Aerts is actively involved in promoting women’s sexual health. She is a member of the International Society for the Study of Vulvovaginal Disease (ISSVD), the International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health (ISSWSH), the International Society for Sexual Medicine (ISSM), and the European Society for Sexual Medicine (ESSM). She is also a member of the Flemish Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (VVOG) and the Flemish Society of Sexology (VVS).

 

She teaches students and healthcare professionals and conducts research to better understand complex female gynecological conditions and treatments. She is a sought-after speaker at national and international conferences and regularly appears on radio programs and in magazines.
